Sounds like you have tried to appeal to your customers with the balloons and flyers … good.
I believe that one thing you have missed is that you have a captive audience or customer base already at your fingertips and just need a little push to make your used video games sell.
What I would suggest is that you put up a sign that states something to the effect “Any Rental Fee of more than $???(a medium rental fee) qualifies for the purchase of a used video game of your choice for $??? (low price).
Understand that you have your customer there in front of you … they are renting videos and games from you daily … just push a little and make it worth their while to purchase a used game or video for your lowest possible price. If they think they have earned it … most will purchase the game.
Another thing to do is … DO NOT put all the games in order on a shelf. Get a tub or larger box and just toss all the games in a pile and let your customers rummage through them. Put up a sign that says something like “GARAGE SALE $??EACH”
Another idea is to put each letter of the alphebet on a ping pong ball or something interesting. Put them in a Fish bowl or find something that will cause the balls to move about … like an airflow or something like that. Anything that shows movement will draw attention and ultimately get action. When a customer comes up to pay for his rental … have them select a ball and he is able to choose a used game or video that begins with the letter on the ping pong ball for the low price of $????.
Another thing to do is … when a customer is checking out … automatically pick up a game and put it with his/her order and just tell them that for $???? they are getting the game. Its like force feeding them … most of them will purchase the game without even thinking of it.
Another idea is to announce a SWAP VIDEO NIGHT … invite your customers to bring in their used videos and games for a swap with others … It’s simple to do …. when the video comes in the store put a small sticky tag on it with a number. The number corresponds with the person that brought it in (so everything is accounted for) include the store in the group with a number as well. Lay out the games and videos out in order … no one except you will know whose games belong to who. More variety will excite customers.
Your store has to have the fetive spirit … wear stupid party hats or clothes that makes no sense … give your customers the impression that you are there to TOTALLY serve them … that it is a fun place to work and do business. Dress up like a clown … dress up in costume during all the holidays or how about EVERYDAY. Do you want to be known as the video store down the street or … let’s go to that Crazy Place that has videos!!! Does everyone wear name tags … not ones printed with a little plastic imprinter … but name tags with neat colorful writing on them.
Your target customers are right in front of you … use them.
